The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white.
On this side there was no shade and no trees.
The station was between two lines of rails in the sun.
Close against the side of the station there was the warm shadow of the building.
A curtain of beads hung across the open door of the bar.
To keep out flies, the bead curtain moved lightly in the faint wind.
The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade.
It was very hot, and they waited for the coming train.
The train would arrive in forty minutes, travelling from Barcelona to Madrid.
“What should we drink?” the girl asked.
She had taken off her hat and put it on the table.
“It’s pretty hot,” the man said.
“Let’s drink some beer.”
The man looked up at the building.
“Do you want to try the new drink, Anis del Toro?”
The two drinks were brought to the table.
The girl looked away at the distant hills.
“They look like white elephants,” she said.
“I’ve never seen one,” the man drank his beer.
“No, you wouldn’t have.”
The girl stared at the hills again.
“They don’t really look like white elephants.
I just meant the colour of their skin through the sun.”
“You started the conversation,” the man said calmly.
They sat down and looked at each other quietly.
“I want you to do something for me,” the man said.
“It’s just a simple operation.”
The girl looked at the ground where the table legs shadowed.
“I know you wouldn’t mind it, Jig.
It’s really nothing at all.
Just let the air in.”
The girl did not answer.
“I’ll go with you all the time.
They just let the air in and it’s all perfectly natural.”
“And what will we do afterward?”
“We’ll be fine afterward.
Just like before.”
“What makes you think so?”
“That’s the only thing that bothers us.
It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy.”
The girl looked at the bead curtain, touched the string gently.
“I don’t care about me,” she said.
“I just care about you.”
The man insisted repeatedly that the operation was simple and safe.
He avoided taking emotional responsibility and kept persuading the girl.
The girl grew tired of the empty comfort and repeated persuasion.
From hesitation she turned to calm and firm.
“I’ll do it then,” she finally said.
“Because I don’t care about myself at all.”
The man relaxed and smiled, thinking the problem was solved.
But the girl looked far away at the hills and the endless railway.
She had completely woken up from this unequal relationship.
“Would you please stop talking?” she said softly but firmly.
The man fell silent.
He knew she was no longer willing to compromise for him.
After a short while, the girl stood up and walked to the end of the station platform.
She looked at the dry side of the valley and the green side of the valley.
One side was barren and empty, the other side lively and hopeful.
She finally made up her own choice.
“I’m fine now,” she smiled gently.
“There’s nothing wrong with me at all.”
