I confess that when first I made acquaintance with Charles Strickland,
I never for a moment discerned
that there was in him anything out of the ordinary.
He was a quiet,
reserved man,
leading a regular and decent life as a London stockbroker.
He had a gentle wife,
two lovely children,
a stable career and a comfortable home.
In the eyes of the world,
he possessed every blessing
that ordinary people spend their whole lives pursuing.
To all appearances,
his life was perfect and flawless.
He attended social gatherings with his wife,
took care of his family,
and fulfilled all the duties expected of a middle‑class gentleman.
The soft sea wind swept across the endless reeds on the shore,
bringing with it the unique desolation of the seaside.
A little girl sat quietly on the back of her father’s old bicycle,
her small hands tightly wrapped around his warm waist.
The winding country road stretched forward quietly,
leading the father and daughter all the way to the remote and vast coastline.
It was an ordinary afternoon,
yet it became the most unforgettable parting in her whole life.
The father parked his bicycle beside the simple and old wooden pier,
slowly squatted down,
and hugged his young daughter tightly in his arms.
There were no complicated words of exhortation,
no reluctant tears,
only silent tenderness and deep reluctance between father and daughter.
After a short embrace,
he turned around firmly,
stepped on the small wooden boat,
and picked up the oar to paddle toward the misty deep sea.

In the bleak autumn,
the reeds all over the shore fluttered and fell with the wind,
covering the entire tidal flat with desolation,
yet she still refused to leave.
In the cold winter,
the sea was cold and silent,
and the biting wind pierced her skin,
but her eyes looking at the distant sea never wavered for a moment.
Time passes silently in repeated waiting.
The ignorant little girl gradually grew into a quiet and elegant young girl.
She experienced youth,
met new people,
stepped into society,
and started her own life journey.

she fell in love,
got married,
had lovely children,
and owned a complete and ordinary life of mortals.
She was busy with trivial housework and daily trivialities every day,
and the trivial fireworks of life filled her days.
On the surface,
her life is complete and stable,

But in the deepest corner of her heart,
there has always been an empty place that can never be filled.
The sea took away her father,
