When individuals gather into a group,
their way of thinking will quietly change.
Separately, a person may stay calm and rational,
able to judge right and wrong with clear logic.
Once he melts into the crowd,
he gradually loses his independent judgment.
Emotion spreads faster than reason among crowds.
Strong feelings sweep across the whole group,
and few people can keep awake in this tide.
A crowd does not simply mean a collection of people.
It forms a new psychological being.
Individual responsibility fades away in groups.
Because no single person needs to bear all the results,
people dare to release impulses they usually hide.
They give up careful thinking,
and follow the shared feelings of the majority.
This is one of the most striking features of mass psychology.
Crowds are easily influenced by images,
simple words and repeated statements.
Complex reasoning cannot touch them deeply.
They do not pursue strict logic or solid evidence.
What moves them is vivid impression and powerful emotion.
A plain sentence repeated again and again
will finally take root in their minds,
even if it lacks reasonable support.
Subtle and careful arguments seldom work on them.
The crowd has its own unique morality.
It may be extremely cruel on one occasion,
and extraordinarily self-sacrificing on another.
It can protect the weak or destroy order,
driven by the same collective passion.
The crowd is not always evil or foolish.
It is changeable, guided by whatever emotion
takes control at that moment.
Extremism is always easy to grow in such soil.
Fame and illusion have great power over crowds.
People are rarely attracted by plain truth.
They tend to worship grand imagination,
which wraps reality into a touching story.
Illusion is not a mistake to them;
it is the spiritual pillar they rely on.
When old illusions fade,
new ones will soon rise to take their place.
Education alone cannot save people from blind conformity.
Knowledge does not automatically bring rationality.
Many educated people still lose themselves
when they are wrapped in group passion.
The book does not look down on ordinary people.
It reminds every reader to stay alert.
We should watch the hidden power of group emotion,
and guard our own independent thinking all the time.
History has repeatedly shown this rule.
Great movements are often pushed forward by crowds.
Their strength can reshape the world,
yet this huge force may lack steady direction.
Only those who understand the nature of crowds
can see clearly behind noisy public passion.
To keep independent is not to stay away from groups,
but to refuse to surrender one’s mind blindly.
