True! — nervous — very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am;

but why will you say that I am mad?

The disease had sharpened my senses —

not destroyed — not dulled them.

Above all was the sense of hearing acute.

I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth.

I heard many things in hell.

How, then, am I mad?

Hearken! and observe how healthily —

how calmly I can tell you the whole story.

It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain;

but once conceived,

it haunted me day and night.

I loved the old man.

He had never wronged me.

He had never given me insult.

For his gold I had no desire.

I think it was his eye!

Yes, it was this!

One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture —

a pale blue eye, with a film over it.

Whenever it fell upon me,

my blood ran cold;

and so by degrees — very gradually —

I made up my mind to take the life of the old man,

and thus rid myself of the eye forever.

Every night, about midnight,

I turned the latch of his door and opened it so gently.

For seven long nights,

I peered at the old man in his sleep.

Yet every night his dreaded eye was closed,

so I could not bring myself to act.

Upon the eighth night,

I opened the door with even greater caution.

I slipped my head in and unfastened the lantern,

letting a thin ray of light fall straight upon his vulture eye.

The eye was wide open,

staring at me with terrifying dullness.

My hatred flared up instantly.

Presently,

I began to hear a low, dull, quick sound,

like a watch wrapped in cotton.

It was the beating of the old man’s heart.

The sound grew louder and faster every second,

filling me with uncontrollable rage and panic.

Fearing the noise would alert the neighbors,

I rushed forward and smothered the old man with the bed.

Soon after,

the heart stopped beating and the old man lay dead.

I carefully dismembered the body

and hid all parts beneath the floor planks.

I cleaned every trace of blood,

believing my crime was perfect and undetectable.

At four o’clock in the morning,

three police officers knocked at the door.

A neighbor had heard a scream overnight

and reported the strange noise.

Confident in my concealment,

I welcomed the officers

and showed them every room in the house.

I sat and chatted casually with them,

feeling completely safe.

Gradually,

a faint ringing sound began to ring in my ears.

It grew louder and clearer,

turning again into the muffled beating of a heart.

Tormented by the sound,

I grew frantic and restless.

I believed the policemen heard it too

and were mocking my guilty conscience.

Unable to bear the torture any longer,

I screamed out the truth in madness.

I tore up the floor planks,

admitting my terrible crime

and exposing the hidden body beneath.

译文

没错!我一直极度神经质,现在依然如此;
