Along the scarred avenues of Paris,

where cannonballs had cracked the stone walls,

Doctor Veyra stopped beside me,

his gaze fixed on a tall building facing the Arc de Triomphe.

He told me the story of Colonel Jouve,

an old soldier who had lived through Napoleon’s glory days.

Long before the siege began,

the eighty-year-old colonel moved into this flat with a wide balcony.

He chose this room for one single reason:

he wanted to stand here and watch the French army march home in triumph.

When news of the crushing defeat arrived,

the old colonel collapsed to the floor as if struck by lightning.

A stroke robbed him of his strength, and he sank into a heavy coma.

His granddaughter stayed by his bedside, trembling with grief.

Her own father fought far away on the front line,

and she dared not let her grandfather learn the whole bitter truth.

By chance, a false rumor of victory drifted through the city.

Somehow, this faint spark of hope seeped into the colonel’s dim consciousness.

When he woke, his eyes held light again.

From that day on, the girl and the doctor made a quiet pact.

They would shield the old patriot from ruinous news.

Every evening, they wove gentle lies.

They told him French troops pushed deeper into enemy land,

that their cannons closed in on the gates of Berlin.

The colonel listened, and his health slowly mended.

In his mind, France was winning the war.

Outside these shuttered windows, the real world was far different.

Paris itself was trapped under siege.

Food grew scarce, winter cold crept into every household,

and distant cannon thunder rolled across the rooftops day after day.

Whenever the old man asked what the noise was,

they told him it was celebratory gunfire,

saluting the advancing French regiments.

He would lean toward the balcony, chest swelling with pride,

imagining the grand victory parade soon to come.

He dragged out his old uniform, polished his rusted saber,

and waited for the moment he could greet his returning soldiers.

The days slipped by,

and the lie grew heavier with every passing hour.

No one dared break the spell that kept the colonel alive.

Until one gray morning,

the sound of steady marching drums flooded the street below.

The colonel pulled himself upright,

struggling to the balcony with trembling limbs.

He adjusted his worn military cap,

ready to cheer for his countrymen.

But when he looked down, his blood turned cold.

It was not the French army.

Rows of Prussian soldiers tramped past the Arc de Triomphe,

their banners flaunting the enemy’s victory.

The illusion shattered in an instant.

All the imagined triumph, all the stories of victory, dissolved away.

He opened his mouth to cry out, his voice hoarse and broken.

“To arms!”

The words barely escaped his lips before he fell forward.

The gentle lie that had sustained him

could no longer hold back the bitter truth.

The old patriot died there on the balcony,

watching the enemy occupy the city he loved.

From that day on, the girl and the doctor made a quiet pact.

They would shield the old patriot from ruinous news.

The girl and the doctor made a pact.

They would shield the old patriot.

原句二

The gentle lie that had sustained him

could no longer hold back the bitter truth.

The gentle lie could no longer hold back the bitter truth.

前文描写老人的期盼时,句子偏柔和舒缓;
