At the lake shore,

in the early morning,

the father and Nick walked down the narrow dirt path

toward the wooden dock.

Across the dark water of the lake,

a small Indian camp lay hidden in the dense woods.

Nick, a young boy,

had never witnessed birth or death before,

and he followed his father quietly,

filled with vague curiosity and faint unease.

Four Indians waited for them by the shore,

silent and solemn in the gray dawn light.

They held the bow of an old wooden rowboat steady,

ready to carry the doctor and his son across the lake.

The lake water was cold and calm,

rippling gently under the soft morning breeze,

yet a heavy, oppressive atmosphere hung over the whole wilderness.

On the boat ride over,

the doctor told Nick they were going to help an Indian woman

who had been in labor for two whole days.

She could not give birth naturally,

trapped in endless, agonizing pain.

No one in the primitive camp knew how to save her,

so they had sent for the white doctor in the distant town.

When they arrived at the shabby bark hut,

they heard the woman’s sharp screams cutting through the quiet woods.

She lay on a rough straw mattress,

twisting and struggling wildly in unbearable suffering.

Her husband sat in the corner of the small hut,

smoking silently with a blank face.

He had hurt his foot days before and could not walk,

helpless to comfort his screaming wife.

The doctor prepared his simple surgical tools quickly,

determined to finish the difficult delivery.

He worked steadily and precisely,

ignoring the woman’s desperate cries and violent struggles.

Nick stood aside,

watching every bloody detail of the operation in shock.

He felt frightened and uneasy,

unable to bear the brutal scene of life being born through pain.

After long and exhausting effort,

the doctor successfully delivered a healthy baby boy.

The exhausted woman finally stopped screaming,

collapsing weakly on the mattress in complete relief.

Everyone in the camp relaxed,

cheering softly for the new life that had come into the world.

Yet when the doctor turned to check the woman’s husband,

a terrifying truth greeted his eyes.

The Indian man had slipped a sharp hunting knife under his throat,

ending his own life silently during his wife’s labor.

He could no longer endure the powerlessness and torment

of watching his wife suffer unbearably.

The doctor was deeply stunned and sorrowful.

He had saved a new life,

but failed to prevent a desperate death.

He covered the dead man’s face gently,

then led the confused Nick out of the gloomy hut.

On the quiet boat trip back across the lake at dawn,

the water glinted bright under the rising sun.

The doctor tried to comfort his son,

telling him childbirth was merely a natural hardship for women.

But Nick sat alone at the boat stern,

staring silently at the sparkling lake water.

He could not erase the scene of birth and death from his mind.

He thought deeply about life and death for the first time.

He felt utterly grateful

that he himself would never die at such a young age.
