Vasili Andreevich Brekhunov, a merchant,

was in a hurry to start,

lest buyers from the town might forestall him

in making a profitable purchase.

The youthful landowner was asking ten thousand rubles for the grove,

simply because Vasili Andreevich was offering seven thousand.

Seven thousand was, however, only a third of its real value.

Vasili Andreevich might perhaps have got it down to his own price,

for the woods were in his district,

and he had a long-standing agreement with the other village dealers

that no one should run up the price in another’s district.

But he had now learnt that some timber-dealers from town

meant to bid for the Goryachkin grove,

and he resolved to go at once and get the matter settled.

So as soon as the feast was over,

he took seven hundred rubles from his strong box,

added to them two thousand three hundred rubles of church money he had in his keeping,

so as to make up the sum to three thousand.

He carefully counted the notes,

and having put them into his pocket-book made haste to start.

Nikita, the only one of Vasili Andreevich’s labourers who was not drunk that day,

ran to harness the horse.

Nikita, though an habitual drunkard,

was not drunk that day,

because since the last day before the fast,

when he had drunk till he lost his senses,

he had abstained from alcohol completely.

He knew that his master had urgent business which would take him far away,

and that he must prepare the sledge and the horse for the journey.

Vasili Andreevich was dressed in two thick fur coats,

one worn over the other,

and a wide girdle was tightly bound round his waist.

He walked out into the cold yard,

and stepped forward towards the waiting sledge.

His wife, pregnant, thin and pale,

with her head and shoulders wrapped tightly in a thick woollen shawl,

stood in the vestibule to see him off.

She could barely show her eyes from beneath the wrapped shawl,

and spoke to her husband in a timid and anxious tone.

“Now really, you ought to take Nikita with you,”

she said timidly, stepping out from the dark doorway.

Vasili Andreevich did not answer a single word.

Her cautious words evidently annoyed him greatly,

and he frowned angrily and spat on the ground.

“You have large sums of money on you,”

she continued in a soft and plaintive voice.

“What if the terrible winter weather gets worse on the open steppe!

Do take him with you, for goodness’ sake!”

“Why? Don’t I know the road perfectly well,

that I must needs take a guide with me?”

exclaimed Vasili Andreevich impatiently.

He uttered every word very distinctly,

and compressed his lips unnaturally,

just as he usually did when bargaining with buyers and sellers.

“Really you ought to take him.

I beg you in God’s name to listen to me!”

his wife repeated anxiously,

wrapping her shawl more closely around her head and body.

“There, she sticks to her words like a stubborn leech!

Where am I to take him on such a short journey?”

Vasili Andreevich complained angrily.

“I am quite ready and willing to go with you, Vasili Andreevich,”

said Nikita cheerfully and respectfully.

“But someone must feed and look after the horses while I am away,”

he added, turning gently to his master’s wife.

“I will look after them carefully, Nikita dear.

I will tell Simon to tend the stables,”

replied the mistress in a gentle voice.

“Well, Vasili Andreevich, am I to come with you?”

said Nikita, standing straight and awaiting his master’s final decision.

“It seems I must humour my old woman’s endless worry.

Get in the sledge, if you are coming,”

said Vasili Andreevich reluctantly.

He firmly took the reins of the horse,

and the sturdy horse started forward at a slow walking pace.

They soon left the quiet village far behind them.

The bitter wind was blowing sharply from the side,

and countless flying snowflakes drove straight in their faces.

Mukhorty, the faithful horse,

stepped forward steadily on the snowy road,

shaking his head constantly to free himself

from the thick snow that settled on his forelock and mane.

Vasili Andreevich wrapped his double fur coat tightly round his body,

and tried his best to shelter himself from the piercing cold wind.

He kept looking straight ahead at the familiar winter road,

which he knew extremely well,

and which he expected to follow without any difficulty at all.

But the snow fell thicker and thicker as they travelled forward,

and the wild wind rose higher and higher across the open plain.

Presently the original road track became less and less visible.

All traces of wheel marks and footprints were gradually covered.

Vasili Andreevich began to strain his eyes hard,

trying desperately to distinguish the wooden boundary marks

that ran regularly along both sides of the country road.

Nikita sat silently in front of the sledge,

not speaking a single word throughout the journey.

He only drew his head deeper down into his collar,

as the freezing cold wind cut sharper against their skin.

After travelling a long and difficult distance,

Vasili Andreevich suddenly stopped the tired horse.

He jumped down from the sledge

and walked forward carefully to look for the boundary mark.

But he could not find any road marks anywhere on the plain.

The whole wide steppe was covered

with one uniform endless sheet of dazzling white snow.

“Well, what are we going to do now?”

said Nikita in a low voice.

“Do you think we have completely lost the road?”

“Of course we have lost our way,”

answered Vasili Andreevich crossly and irritably.

“We have no choice but to try back along our old track.”

They turned the horse and drove backward for a long time,

hoping anxiously to strike the main road once again.

But the original road was completely gone forever,

buried deep and thoroughly under the heavy drifting snow.

The thick darkness of night began to settle slowly over the lonely steppe,

and the violent winter storm raged wildly without any pause.

The two men were trapped in the boundless snowfield,

facing the severe test of cold, darkness and despair.
