Tonight the moon is very bright.

I have not seen it for over thirty years.

Today when I saw it,

my spirits were extraordinarily roused.

I realize that the past thirty years have been muddled.

But I must be extremely careful.

Otherwise, why should the Zhao family dog stare at me?

I have reason to be afraid.

Last night, the wolf-eyed villagers came to my house.

They looked at me strangely.

I know their glances hide a murderous thought.

I dare not look them straight in the eye.

Every face I meet seems to carry that secret intention.

When I walk along the street,

people draw back from me,

and they whisper to one another as I pass by.

Some children point their fingers at me and laugh.

Their cold eyes pierce my heart,

just like the eyes of the grown men.

I lock myself inside the room.

I examine the old history book piled on my desk.

Between every line of the text,

I can see two words written faintly: “Eat men.”

I read it again and again,

and the words glow clearer and clearer.

All the stories, all the principles,

are wrapped within this cruel truth.

Page after page, chapter after chapter,

the writers carefully arrange their words of virtue and righteousness.

Yet beneath those polished phrases,

the same dark purpose remains unchanged.

I turn to ask my elder brother.

He tells me that such customs have existed since ancient times.

He says it is the natural way of the world.

His calm tone chills me to the bone.

He is one of them.

He too accepts this terrible rule without question.

I try to argue with him,

to tell him what I have discovered in those ancient books.

He only sighs,

shakes his head,

and decides that I have fallen deeper into madness.

Children pass by the window.

They also stare at me with cold eyes.

They have not learned this by themselves.

Adults have taught them silently.

The poison passes down from generation to generation.

No one suspects that they are trapped in the same evil system.

Even the little boys who once ran to play with me

now shrink away at the sight of my face.

They have already absorbed the hidden hatred

that binds the whole village together.

I think of the young woman who cried for her son.

I think of the farmer who beat his wife.

I think of the man who was dragged away and punished last month.

Every incident that once puzzled me

now fits into this terrible pattern.

All these people,

whether knowingly or unknowingly,

participate in this ancient cannibalistic ritual.

They punish those who break the old rules,

and they feed on the weak without guilt.

Am I the only one who can see it?

If I speak out,

they will call me mad.

They will isolate me, restrain me,

and make me disappear quietly.

Yet I cannot close my eyes to what I have discovered.

This society devours the weak,

and covers its cruelty with moral doctrines.

The so-called ethics, loyalty and filial piety,

are nothing but fine wrappings for the old crime.

Even my own brother may eat me.

I am his younger brother.

That fact does not protect me.

Blood ties cannot defeat the long-standing custom.

I pace back and forth in the dim room.

My mind races,

and terror rises endlessly in my chest.

He has raised me, cared for me,

and yet he would not hesitate to sacrifice me

to keep the old order undisturbed.

I think of myself.

Perhaps I have unconsciously eaten several pieces of human flesh in the past,

through the food I shared with the others.

Now I understand the horror of it.

I cannot continue to be part of this cycle.

I must break away from it,

even if the whole world stands against me.

But hope has not vanished completely.

Among countless people,

there must be some who have not eaten human flesh.

Can we find a way to break this vicious cycle?

Can we stop this ancient crime once and for all?

I cry out in the darkness.

Save the children.

Perhaps only the young generation

can escape the curse of the old world.

We must break the chain of this cannibalistic tradition.

We must build a world where human beings do not devour one another.
