The old picture book rested on the worn oak table,
its leather cover cracked and softened at every corner.
Faint traces of old gold lettering faded away on the front.
Thick dust settled lightly between the stacked pages.
It had been locked inside the dark cupboard
for many quiet, forgotten years.
One slow grey afternoon in late autumn,
a young girl stepped into the empty parlour.
Her eyes caught sight of the cupboard door
left slightly ajar.
She reached inside and drew out the book carefully.
Her fingertips brushed the rough, dry cover.
She lifted the cover open gently.
A thin, dusty scent rose toward her face,
the smell of aged paper and dried pressed flowers.
The first illustration showed a sunlit garden.
Climbing roses twisted round a wooden trellis.
A small girl stood beside a stone birdbath.
That little figure was her mother,
long before she had grown up.
The painted girl wore a pale linen dress,
and her eyes smiled softly toward the sun.
The girl turned the page slowly.
A coastal view spread before her.
Calm blue waves rolled upon the sandy shore.
Two men sat on weathered timber,
holding fishing rods in their hands.
One of them was her grandfather.
He had passed away twelve years before.
Inside the picture,
he would always sit there,
peaceful and untouched by passing time.
Page after page, still scenes unfolded.
Birthday tea parties under apple trees,
a white cottage covered with jasmine blooms,
a brown horse waiting quietly beside a gate.
Nothing in these painted pictures could move.
No wind shook the painted leaves.
No voice drifted out from the printed colours.
Yet as she stared,
old memories began to wake inside her heart.
She could almost hear distant laughter,
taste the sweet summer air,
and feel warm sunlight falling on her shoulders.
She began to understand the quiet magic of the picture book.
Pictures were fixed shapes locked in space.
They could not change or move forward.
But the memories they stirred lived in time.
They flowed backward,
carrying her back to moments that would never return.
Lines and colours on paper held no life of their own.
Only human memory could breathe life into them.
Her mother came into the room quietly,
and leaned over to look at the open pages.
“Oh, this old picture book,” she whispered.
“I thought we had lost it years ago.”
“Do you still remember all these days?” the girl asked.
Her mother gave a faint, tired smile.
“I remember them clearly,
yet they feel like half-forgotten dreams now.
Only these pictures stay,
to remind us of what we once had.”
The girl closed the book slowly and gently.
She laid her palm once again on the worn cover.
These silent images would wait there forever,
for another reader to unlock the buried past.
They could not bring back lost days or dead people.
They could only keep a fragile trace of old beauty,
a soft witness to happiness that once existed.
That was all this old picture book could do.
And that was enough.

画册里的图像属于空间艺术,永恒静止;
