It is a melancholy sight to travel through the streets of Dublin,
or wander across the countryside of Ireland.
The roads and doorways are crowded with helpless female beggars.
They wear ragged clothes and carry numerous infants in their arms.
These poor children grow up starving and helpless in public.
As soon as they are old enough to move freely,
they either become thieves for lack of honest employment,
or flee their homeland to seek survival in foreign lands.
They waste their youth, their strength and their future,
merely because their country cannot offer them a living.
This terrible phenomenon has long troubled thoughtful people.
The enormous number of poor children has become a heavy burden.
They consume food, bring no profit,
and add endless pressure to impoverished families.
All previous improvement plans have proved useless and shallow.
Some people suggest encouraging parents to raise children properly.
Others advise limiting the birth rate of poor families.
However, these methods require long-term social reform.
They demand kindness, investment and patience,
which the greedy upper class is completely unwilling to provide.
After years of careful observation and rational calculation,
I have finally conceived a practical and beneficial proposal.
This plan requires no labor, no money and no trouble.
It can solve poverty, reduce population pressure,
and promote economic development at the same time.
I am assured by experienced merchants and planners,
that a healthy one-year-old infant is tender and nutritious.
Well-fed babies are delicious food for wealthy citizens.
They can be stewed, roasted, baked or boiled into fine dishes.
They can also be made into exquisite gourmet delicacies.
I therefore humbly propose a clear and effective solution.
Among one hundred and twenty thousand poor newborn infants annually,
twenty thousand can be reserved for future breeding reproduction.
The remaining one hundred thousand can be sold at the age of one.
These infant products will be supplied to rich landlords,
noblemen, merchants and people of high social status.
The price will be reasonable and acceptable for the upper class.
This trade will bring stable income to poor peasant families.
Poor parents will no longer bear the burden of raising children.
They will gain economic profit from their own infants.
The whole nation will reduce food consumption greatly.
The market will obtain new commodities and new consumption vitality.
Furthermore, this proposal will produce additional social benefits.
It will prevent immoral abortion and infanticide behaviors.
It will stop the tragedy of mothers abandoning their own babies.
It will purify social morality and reduce criminal behaviors.
All industries related to infant cooking will flourish rapidly.
New restaurants, new recipes and new business models will appear.
Chefs will devote themselves to perfecting infant cuisine art.
Diners will enjoy rare delicacies that ordinary people cannot imagine.
I firmly believe this proposal has no single disadvantage.
It benefits the poor, satisfies the rich, and stabilizes the society.
It requires no political reform and touches no noble’s interest.
It is simple, efficient, profitable and completely feasible.
No other plan can solve national poverty so thoroughly.
I sincerely hope the public will accept this modest proposal.
