Back in the days when everyone was old and stupid or young and foolish,

me and Sugar were the only kids in the block who felt perfectly free and easy.

A strange lady once moved into our neighbourhood,

with neat natural hair,

formal speech and plain daily dressing.

We all called her Miss Moore.

She was different from all the adults we had ever met.

She never played around or chatted casually with local people.

Instead, she always devoted herself to educating us young children.

She believed that kids growing up in poor communities

needed broader vision and deeper social thinking.

Therefore, she often took us out of our familiar block

to experience the real world hidden beyond our narrow life.

We grew up in Harlem, a typical black residential area in New York.

The streets were noisy and crowded, the living rooms narrow and shabby.

Most families struggled with tight income and difficult living conditions.

We children spent all our summer days wandering on the streets,

playing tricks, chasing each other and killing time aimlessly.

We knew nothing about the wealthy life in downtown New York.

One ordinary summer afternoon,

Miss Moore gathered all the local children together.

She told us that we were going to have a special field trip.

None of us felt interested or joyful at the news.

We thought it would be another boring moral lecture.

We were young, rebellious, and tired of adult preaching.

We followed Miss Moore to take the subway to Fifth Avenue.

It was a totally unfamiliar and luxurious urban area for us.

Clean wide streets, elegant buildings and fashionable crowds

formed a world completely different from our shabby community.

Finally, we stepped into the world-famous luxury toy store.

All the goods displayed in the shop window were exquisite and shining.

Various delicate toys were placed neatly in bright glass cabinets.

When we saw the price tags, all of us fell into total silence.

A simple toy sailboat was priced at an extremely high amount,

far exceeding the total income of a Harlem family for several months.

We stood in front of the window, shocked and confused.

We could not understand why a single toy could be so expensive.

While poor people struggled for basic food and daily necessities,

the rich could casually buy fancy toys with huge amounts of money.

The huge gap between the rich and the poor struck us sharply.

Sugar asked softly why the world was designed so unfairly.

I kept silent, but strong anger rose from the bottom of my heart.

I had never thought about such serious social problems before.

I only knew my simple life in the small neighbourhood.

This unexpected experience completely changed my childish cognition.

On the way back to Harlem, all the children remained low-spirited.

Miss Moore did not blame us or give us rigid lectures.

She just guided us to think independently and face social reality.

She told us that true education was not merely textbook knowledge,

but the ability to recognize inequality and pursue self-improvement.

This special trip became the most profound lesson in my childhood.

It awakened me from ignorant childishness and blind happiness.

I gradually realized the cruelty of class solidification in society,

and understood the significance of vision, knowledge and struggle.
