He was working on the edge of the common,
beyond the small brook that ran in the dip at the bottom of the garden,
carrying the garden path in continuation from the plank bridge on to the common.
He had cut the rough turf and bracken,
leaving the grey, dryish soil bare.
But he was worried because he could not get the path straight,
there was a pleat between his brows.
He had set up his sticks,
and taken the sights between the big pine trees,
but for some reason everything seemed wrong.
He looked again,
straining his keen blue eyes,
that had a touch of the Viking in them,
through the shadowy pine trees as through a doorway,
at the green-grassed garden-path rising from the shadow of alders by the log bridge up to the sunlit flowers.
Tall white and purple columbines,
and the butt-end of the old Hampshire cottage that crouched near the earth amid flowers,
blossoming in the bit of shaggy wildness round about.
There was a sound of children’s voices calling and talking:
high, childish, girlish voices,
slightly didactic and tinged with domineering.
“If you don’t come quick, nurse,
I shall run out there to where there are snakes.”
And nobody had the sangfroid to reply:
“Run then, little fool.”
It was always,
“No, darling. Very well, darling. In a moment, darling.
Darling, you must be patient.”
This was Egbert’s home,
the place he had built with Winifred in the quiet countryside,
away from the noise of London and the mechanical greed of modern England.
Egbert loved the earth,
the slow growth of plants,
the secret life of wild creatures.
He cared nothing for empire,
for glory,
for the loud patriotic speeches that swept across the country when war broke out.
He had no wish to kill strangers,
no hunger for military honour.
Yet between him and Winifred,
a quiet rift had widened with the years.
She clung to social expectations,
to the proper shape of a husband and father,
and Egbert could not fit the mould.
He was soft,
sensitive,
rooted in the earth rather than in public duty.
When the war came,
the pressure closed in.
Relatives and neighbours whispered.
Winifred herself,
though she still loved him,
began to believe that a man ought to answer the nation’s call.
Slowly,
Egbert yielded.
He enlisted,
not out of fierce loyalty,
but out of a weary, helpless surrender to the world’s demand.
He left the cottage,
the columbines,
the brook and the snakes in the grass,
and went across the sea to Flanders.
The rough brutality of army life broke him quickly.
He was not made for mud,
shellfire,
and blind obedience.
In a trench,
under crashing artillery,
he fell.
His death was not heroic,
no grand triumph for England.
It was merely the quiet extinction of a man who belonged to the old, secret earth of England,
sacrificed to a national fever he had never understood.
Back in the cottage,
Winifred stayed among the flowers and the children.
The countryside looked the same,
soft and ancient.
But something vital was gone.
The England they had once loved,
the quiet, living England rooted in soil and instinct,
had been swallowed by the rage of war.

而在于土地、自然与个体鲜活的生命本身;
