In the very olden time, there lived a semi-barbaric king,

whose ideas, though softened a little by his civilized neighbours,

were still wild and free.

He was full of imagination, and his power was so great

that he could turn every strange thought into reality.

One of his favourite plans was a huge public arena.

It was built to carry out what he called poetic justice.

When a man was accused of a serious crime,

his fate would be settled inside this arena.

All the people would come to watch the trial.

The king sat high on his throne, and gave a signal.

Then the prisoner walked out into the open space.

Right in front of him stood two doors, side by side,

and they looked exactly the same.

The prisoner must walk forward and open one door.

He could choose freely, guided by nothing but his own will.

Behind one door waited a fierce tiger,

which would leap out and tear him to pieces at once.

Behind the other stood a beautiful young lady.

If he picked this door, he would marry her immediately,

no matter whether he already had a wife or loved another.

This was the king’s strange form of justice.

The accused could not blame anyone but himself.

Luck or fate would decide if he lived or died.

The whole kingdom enjoyed this exciting trial,

for no one knew what would happen before the door opened.

The king had a daughter, as lovely and passionate as himself.

She fell deeply in love with a handsome young courtier.

The youth was brave and gentle, but his rank was far below hers.

When the king found out their secret love, he flew into anger.

The young man was thrown into prison at once,

and his trial in the arena was fixed.

The princess suffered terribly during those days.

She used all her influence and gold to find out the secret of the two doors.

No one else had ever managed to get this hidden information.

She learned clearly which door held the tiger,

and which one led to the fair lady.

She also knew who that lady was.

It was a girl who had often smiled at her lover before.

A burning jealousy filled the princess’s heart.

The day of the trial came.

The arena was packed with noisy, curious crowds.

The king took his seat, and the young man stepped out.

His eyes searched quickly and landed on the princess.

He knew she must have discovered the secret.

With a silent look, he asked her which door he should choose.

For a moment, she sat still, trapped in painful struggle.

If she sent him to the lady,

she would watch the man she loved marry another woman.

If she pointed to the tiger,

she would see him killed right before her eyes.

After long nights of suffering, she made her choice.

She raised her hand and gave a quick, quiet signal toward the right.

The young man turned calmly and walked to the right-hand door.

He reached out and put his hand on its handle.

Now, the question that hangs forever in this story appears.

Did the tiger come out, or did the lady?

We cannot be sure.

It all rests on the dark,

jealous heart of that semi-barbaric princess.

In the very olden time, there lived a semi-barbaric king,

whose ideas, though softened a little by his civilized neighbours,

were still wild and free.

there lived 是there be类倒装存在句型;

whose引导非限制性定语从句修饰king;

though softened a little by his civilized neighbours

完整形式为though his ideas were softened a little by his civilized neighbours。

There lived a semi-barbaric king whose ideas were wild and free.

原句:

If she sent him to the lady,

she would watch the man she loved marry another woman.

if引导虚拟条件状语从句,表达假设情景;

she loved 是省略关系代词that的定语从句,修饰the man;

watch sb. do sth.

She would watch the man marry another woman if she chose the lady.

When we stand at a crossroads full of temptation and pain,

we may struggle between what we long for

and what we cannot bear to accept.

Some choices bring relief, yet they also carry hidden sorrow.

Not every right answer is easy to pick.

全文多处对照:生的结局伴随嫉妒煎熬,死的结局带来永久失去;

选美女,爱人活下来,却永远属于别人;
