The news of the arrival of the Pharaon had spread through Marseilles.

A crowd gathered along the harbour,

waiting for the merchant ship that had sailed far across the Mediterranean.

Among the watchers stood old Dantès,

thin and trembling, his eyes fixed eagerly on the approaching vessel.

He had waited months for the return of his only son, Edmond.

Edmond Dantès stood at the helm, calm and steady.

He was young, barely nineteen,

with a bright face and a brave, honest look in his eyes.

The long voyage had worn him a little,

yet joy burned inside his heart.

He knew that after this journey,

he would marry Mercédès, the girl he loved deeply.

He also hoped that the ship‑owner, Morrel,

would name him the new captain of the Pharaon.

When the anchor dropped into the blue water,

Edmond leaped lightly onto the shore.

He looked quickly through the crowd,

and at last he saw his father.

He pushed past the noisy townsfolk,

and ran toward the old man with open arms.

“Father! Dear father!” Edmond cried.

The old man turned,

and when he saw his son’s familiar face,

he nearly fainted from delight.

He clung to Edmond, his hands shaking.

For a long moment, neither of them could speak.

All the loneliness and worry of those months melted away.

“I feared I should never see you again,” the old man whispered.

“I have counted every day since you left.”

Edmond held his father gently,

and promised that he would never leave him to suffer in want.

He told his father that soon he would have good wages,

and a home where they might live peacefully together.

But their sweet reunion did not last long.

Danglars, the ship’s clerk,

watched Edmond from a distance with dark envy.

Danglars wanted the position of captain for himself.

He hated that the young sailor was favoured by Morrel.

Beside him stood Fernand, a fisherman.

Fernand loved Mercédès,

and his heart twisted with pain and jealousy

when he saw how happy Edmond was.

These two men would soon weave a cruel plot.

Edmond hurried away to visit Mercédès.

He walked along the sun‑lit coastal path,

toward the small village of the Catalans.

The sea breeze carried the sharp scent of salt and wild rosemary.

His mind was filled with visions of their wedding,

of a quiet life beside the sea.

He did not guess that shadows were gathering around him.

Mercédès waited for him beneath an olive tree.

Her dark hair shone in the afternoon light.

When she caught sight of Edmond,

she ran forward without hesitation.

They spoke softly of their love and their future.

Mercédès begged him not to stay away so long again.

She told him that many men in the village wished to marry her,

but her heart belonged only to him.

“I shall be yours before the month ends,” Edmond said.

“Nothing on earth shall separate us.”

Mercédès smiled through happy tears.

She trusted his word completely.

She could not imagine that in just a few days,

this bright hope would be shattered into ruin.

While the lovers talked,

Danglars and Fernand sat together in a tavern.

They whispered and planned.

Danglars knew that Captain Leclerc, before he died,

had given Edmond a secret letter meant for a follower of Napoleon.

In those days, such a letter was dangerous proof.

A man carrying it could be arrested as a traitor.

Fernand agreed to help send the secret accusation.

He cared nothing for politics.

He only wanted Edmond out of the way,

so that he might win Mercédès for himself.

Danglars wrote the anonymous note.

He described Edmond as a Bonapartist messenger,

carrying forbidden letters across the sea.

He handed the paper to Fernand,

who slipped it to the local magistrate without a second thought.

Edmond knew nothing of this treachery.

He spent the next day preparing for his wedding feast.

The table was laid in a little garden.

Friends and neighbours came to celebrate.

Wine and fruit were set out for all the guests.

Laughter floated through the warm air.

Morrel was there, and he spoke openly

of making Edmond captain of the Pharaon.

Every word filled Edmond’s heart with gratitude.

Just as the feast was beginning,

heavy footsteps sounded at the garden gate.

Two officers of the law stepped inside.

They looked stern and unsmiling.

They called for Edmond Dantès.

A hush fell over all the guests.

Edmond walked forward calmly,

wondering what trouble could have come to him.

“You are under arrest,” one officer said.

A murmur of shock ran through the crowd.

Mercédès cried out and reached for him.

Edmond turned to her, trying to soothe her fear.

He told everyone there must be some mistake,

that he would soon return.

He believed the truth would clear his name.

He did not know where this arrest would lead.

He could not imagine the Château d’If,

the dark island prison surrounded by endless sea.

He could not see the fourteen years of loneliness,

suffering and slow learning waiting for him.

At this moment, he was still the lucky young sailor,

full of love and hope,

blind to the deep cruelty hidden in human hearts.

He could not imagine the Château d’If,

the dark island prison surrounded by endless sea.

He could not see the fourteen years of loneliness,

suffering and slow learning waiting for him.

并列重复句式,反复强化悲剧伏笔;

He could not imagine the Château d’If. He could not see the fourteen years.

原句:

Danglars knew that Captain Leclerc, before he died,

had given Edmond a secret letter meant for a follower of Napoleon.

that引导宾语从句,插入时间状语before he died打断主句节奏,

丹格拉尔的仇恨源于对地位、财富的贪欲;

Bright hopes may bloom in the warmest sunshine,

yet hidden envy can quietly dig the trap that ruins everything.
