In the great city,
there lived two good children,
Kay and Gerda.
They were not brother and sister,
but they loved each other as dearly as if they were.
Their homes were next to one another,
and they could climb between their windows
to sit together and share stories.
In summer,
they grew roses in their little window garden.
The flowers bloomed softly,
and the two children would sit side by side,
breathing in their sweet fragrance.
One winter evening,
Kay sat by the window,
watching the snowflakes drift down from the grey sky.
A strange, icy splinter from the devil’s broken mirror
flew into his eye.
Another shard slipped into his heart.
The mirror was made to twist everything beautiful
into something ugly and cold.
From that moment,
Kay’s heart turned hard and frozen.
He no longer cared for Gerda,
or the roses they loved.
He laughed at gentle things,
and his eyes only saw faults and flaws in the world.
When the first heavy snow came,
Kay ran out to play with his sledge.
A magnificent sleigh,
driven by the Snow Queen,
glided past him on the frozen street.
Her gown was white as snow,
her crown sharp and glittering like ice crystals.
She called to Kay,
and he tied his small sledge to her sleigh.
Faster and faster they raced across the snow,
away from the town,
over frozen lakes and silent moorland.
Kay tried to untie the rope,
but the icy magic held him fast.
At last,
they flew high up into the bitter winter sky,
toward the Snow Queen’s distant palace.
Gerda searched everywhere for Kay.
No one in the town knew where he had gone.
She refused to believe that Kay was gone forever.
She put on her red shoes,
and set out down the river,
hoping the water would carry her to him.
Her journey was long and full of trials.
She met a wise old sorceress in a hidden garden,
who tried to keep her forever among endless summer blooms.
Yet Gerda remembered Kay,
and broke free from the enchantment.
She travelled through dark forests,
rode on the back of a reindeer,
and crossed the border into the land of eternal snow.
The reindeer brought her close to the Snow Queen’s palace.
The wind howled,
and every breath turned to white mist.
Inside the great hall of ice,
Kay sat alone on the frozen floor.
He worked endlessly with pieces of ice,
trying to spell the word “Eternity”.
The Snow Queen told him that if he succeeded,
he would be free.
His face was pale,
his hands blue with cold.
He did not notice Gerda when she ran into the hall.
Gerda ran to him and threw her arms around him.
She wept hot tears upon his chest.
The warm tears melted the icy shard inside his heart.
She cried again,
and her tears fell into his eye.
The splinter of the evil mirror washed away.
Kay began to cry too.
As his tears flowed,
he could see clearly once more.
He remembered Gerda,
their roses,
and all the warm happiness they had shared.
They held each other and wept for joy.
The ice pieces danced around them,
and together they spelled “Eternity” without effort.
