The Floss wound slowly through the wide green valley,
carrying soft ripples past meadows and old farmhouses.
Its water looked calm and gentle on sunny days,
yet it held hidden power no villager could fully measure.
Beside the river stood the old Tulliver mill,
the heart of the family’s fortune and daily labour.
Maggie Tulliver was the miller’s younger daughter.
She had a quick mind, a hungry heart and wild imagination.
She cared little for neat housework or quiet obedience,
which made her strange in the eyes of her neighbours.
Her elder brother Tom was built from a different mould.
He valued honour, duty and steady hard work above all things.
Tom loved his sister,
but he could not understand her restless thoughts.
He believed she ought to fit herself into the rules of the world.
Maggie longed for understanding and spiritual freedom,
a kind of freedom that narrow village life refused to give.
They grew up side by side,
bound by deep blood-love yet separated by different natures.
Disaster fell when Mr. Tulliver lost his lawsuit.
The mill and the land slipped away from the family.
Poverty swept over the once comfortable household.
Tom put aside his own dreams and took up heavy work.
He fixed his whole mind on clearing the family debt,
restoring the broken name of Tulliver little by little.
Maggie suffered in this changed life too.
She tried to be patient and useful,
but her inner craving for beauty and knowledge never faded.
Many misunderstandings rose between brother and sister.
Small quarrels hardened into silent wounds.
They still cared for each other,
yet they kept walking further and further apart.
Years rolled on, and the great autumn flood came at last.
Rain poured without stop, and the Floss began to rise.
It climbed over the banks, swallowed fields and roads,
and turned the whole lowland into a grey waste of water.
When Maggie heard the roar of the flood,
she thought at once of her brother and the old mill.
She took a small boat and rowed through the swirling current.
She wanted to find Tom and bring him to safety.
Tom saw her coming through the mist and storm.
In that dangerous hour, all old disagreements melted away.
They were only the two children who once played by the river.
They held each other’s hands firmly in the rushing flood.
The cruel flood did not spare them in the end.
The boat was smashed by a heavy floating timber.
The wild water closed over both brother and sister.
The river that had witnessed their childhood laughter,
finally wrapped them together in endless quiet.
Their lifelong conflict ended in the same fate.
