A Room of One’s Own《一间自己的房间》节选

作者:Virginia Woolf(弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫)

A lock on the door does not merely separate a room from the outside world.

It creates privacy,

and true privacy is the most fundamental condition of free thinking.

For countless centuries,

women have been defined by their social roles rather than their selves.

They are trained to be obedient daughters,

devoted wives and responsible mothers.

Their daily life is filled with endless trivial housework,

interrupted constantly by the demands of family and society.

They have no stable income of their own,

no right to dispose of personal wealth freely.

They cannot arrange their own time independently,

nor can they reserve a quiet moment for thinking and creation.

If a woman harbors love for literature and dreams of writing,

she will face countless invisible barriers in the patriarchal society.

She has no quiet study to settle down and polish words.

She has no spare money to support reading, traveling and thinking.

Every thought in her mind is easily disturbed and dissipated.

To make this abstract dilemma concrete and persuasive,

Woolf put forward the famous hypothesis of Shakespeare’s sister.

If Shakespeare had a younger sister with equal literary talent,

equal imagination and equal passion for art,

she would never obtain the same opportunity as her brother.

She would be refused the right of formal school education.

She would be arranged for marriage at a young age.

She would be trapped in trivial family chores all her life.

Her brilliant literary talent would be buried silently in daily hardship.

No poem, no drama, no literary name would be left in history.

This imaginary tragedy reflects the real fate of countless talented women.

It is not that women lack wisdom or creativity.

It is that the cruel social environment deprives them of growth conditions.

Woolf firmly pointed out two essential conditions for female creation.

The first is five hundred pounds of annual independent income.

Stable economic independence brings personal dignity and choice freedom.

It frees women from the attachment and restraint of others.

It allows people to observe the world calmly without catering to secular views.

The second indispensable condition is a private room of one’s own.

A room that can be locked belongs solely to the individual soul.

In this exclusive space,

women are no longer attached to any social identity.

They can think independently, record emotions, observe life freely.

They can immerse themselves in literary creation without external disturbance.

Money provides spiritual backing for independent thinking.

Space provides a shelter for inner soul and literary inspiration.

Without material foundation,

all spiritual pursuit and creative dreams are fragile and empty.

Woolf’s viewpoint never intends to confront or antagonize men.

It does not pursue special privileges for female groups.

It advocates equal living conditions and equal spiritual rights.

It emphasizes that all creative minds need freedom and respect.

Whether male or female,

human intelligence and imagination grow only in free soil.

The bondage of women in the old times is dual oppression.

It includes the poverty of material life

and the confinement of spiritual space.

Social prejudice imprisons their behavior,

and economic dependence shackles their souls.

Only when women own independent wealth and exclusive private space,

can they break through the limitations of secular vision.

Can they get rid of stereotyped social labels,

reshape independent personality and unique spiritual world.

Only then can female literature bloom with unique and lasting charm.
