On my first voyage as master,

I commanded a young ship,

and I was still a stranger to my crew.

I was lonely and uneasy,

not yet sure of my own authority.

We lay at anchor in the Gulf of Siam,

in a motionless, glassy sea,

under a sky heavy with heat.

One night,

when all was quiet on deck,

I saw something dark in the water.

It was a man,

swimming slowly toward our ship.

I lowered a rope,

and pulled him aboard.

His name was Leggatt.

He had escaped from the Sephora,

the ship anchored nearby.

In a furious storm some days before,

one of his fellow sailors had tried to rush him.

Leggatt had struck the man down,

and the man died.

The captain of the Sephora meant to take him home for trial.

Rather than face hanging,

he slipped overboard under cover of darkness.

I looked at Leggatt.

He was quiet,

self-possessed,

with the same look in his eyes

that I sometimes found in my own.

He was my secret sharer,

the double of myself.

Without conscious thought,

I made up my mind to hide him.

I led him into my own cabin,

behind the curtain that screened my bunk.

No one must know he was there.

The steward came in and out,

the mate called for orders,

and every small sound filled me with fear.

If they found Leggatt,

I would lose my command,

my reputation,

everything.

Day after day,

the Sephora lingered in the bay.

Her captain came over to our ship,

asking whether we had seen his runaway mate.

I answered him calmly,

while Leggatt stood hidden,

only a few feet away.

The lies tasted bitter in my mouth,

yet I could not give him up.

He was not merely a fugitive.

He was the part of me

that dared to break rules,

to act on raw human impulse.

At last,

the wind shifted.

I planned to carry Leggatt to a distant shore,

where he might swim for safety.

I steered the ship close to a dark, lonely coast,

far from trade routes.

When the moment came,

Leggatt slipped silently into the black water.

I watched his head move toward the land,

until he vanished among the shadows.

Then I turned back to my ship.

My hands were steady.

My heart was calm.

I had let my other self go.

The secret was gone,

but in that dangerous sharing,

I had learned to know myself,

and to stand firm as a captain.

在道德和职责之间摇摆不定;

不代表放任沉沦;
