《The Housebreaker of Shady Hill and Other Stories》(1958

Blake drank a second Gibson and saw by the clock

that he had missed the fast express.

He would have to take the local train, the Five-Forty-Eight.

When he stepped out of the bar,

the sky was still pale with twilight,

and a thin rain kept falling over the Manhattan streets.

He scanned the sidewalk carefully,

searching for the woman who had been following him,

and thought she was gone.

He glanced over his shoulder repeatedly on his way to the station,

wrapped in unease,

for he knew exactly who she was.

Her name was Miss Dent, once his secretary.

He had hired her because her timidity and low self-regard made her seem safe,

easy to control,

free from troublesome consequences.

One evening after work he invited her out for a drink, slept with her,

and the very next morning, without a word of explanation,

he arranged to dismiss her from the office.

For months, he had pushed her out of his mind,

convinced his casual cruelty would leave no lasting mark.

He bought an evening newspaper and boarded the Five-Forty-Eight.

The carriage was half empty,

and he chose a seat beside the river,

hanging his damp raincoat over the back of the chair.

He was an ordinary, unremarkable man, neatly dressed,

fitting perfectly into the anonymous crowd of suburban commuters

who shuttled between the city office and the quiet homes of Shady Hill.

He looked around,

hoping to spot a neighbor, someone who could offer a sense of safety,

but the faces around him were all strangers.

Just as he relaxed a little,

Miss Dent slid quietly into the seat next to him.

His heart turned cold.

He tried to rise, to slip away toward the carriage door,

but she spoke softly, stopping him.

She told him she had been ill,

that she had spent time in a psychiatric hospital,

that she had lost every chance of steady work after he fired her.

Then she pulled a small pistol from her worn handbag

and laid it on her lap,

where only Blake could see it.

She did not shout or threaten wildly.

She only asked him to read the letter she had written for him,

a letter full of lonely dreams, hurt and shattered hope.

The train rolled steadily along the river track, stopping at small stations,

passengers getting on and off,

and no one else noticed the terror trapped in this quiet seat.

Blake read every word, his hands shaking.

When the train pulled into the Shady Hill station, his usual stop,

she ordered him to walk ahead of her.

She led him away from the lit platform,

toward a dark, empty freight shed beside the tracks.

There she told him to kneel down

and press his face into the cold dirt.

Blake wept, broken by humiliation.

After a long, heavy silence,

Miss Dent told him that she would not kill him.

She turned and walked away, vanishing into the rainy dusk,

leaving Blake alone on the muddy ground,

with the rumble of the receding train hanging in the damp air.

布莱克拥有地位、话语权,可以随意引诱、抛弃、辞退下属;
