Henry Ⅳ Part 2《
作者:William Shakespeare(威廉·莎士比亚)
首次收录于:首版四开本《The Second Part of Henrie the Fourth》

KING HENRY.
Dost thou so much encroach upon my bed of rest?
What art thou, that darest search my closet thus,
And take the crown from off my pillow?
PRINCE HENRY.
I never thought to steal it, my dear father.
I saw it lie there heavy on your head,
The weight of all the cares that vex your soul.
I thought it was an enemy to your rest,
And therefore took it up, to ease your brow
Of that huge load of grief and toil it bears.
If I have sinned, my error was but fond,
Born out of tender love, not wild ambition.
KING HENRY.
Thy wish was father, Harry, to that thought.
I stay too long by thee, I weary thee.
Dost thou so hunger for my empty chair,
That thou wilt needs invest thee with my honours
Before thy hour be ripe? O foolish youth!
Thou seek’st the greatness that will overwhelm thee.
So shalt thou, my son, hear heavy tales,
Of plots, of treasons, of rebellious wars,
And find the crown a burden, not a delight.
God knows, my son, by what by-paths and indirect
Crooked ways I met this crown.
I know the troubles that attend it still.
I won it with much blood, and many fears,
And I shall leave it to thee full of cares.
The peace we hold is but a brittle peace,
That breaks at every whisper of revolt.
Then, Harry, be wise, watch all the great ones well,
Divide their strength, and let them not combine.
Busy thy giddy minds with foreign quarrels,
That they may not have leisure to plot at home.
Be gentle, yet be firm; love justice well,
But temper it with mercy, lest it be cruel.
Commit the oldest sins the newest kind of ways.
Be careful, then; for heavy is the load
That sits upon the forehead of a king.
PRINCE HENRY.
My gracious lord, I never longed for power.
When I was wild and wasted time in taverns,
I did but study men, and learn their hearts.
I know the vice of common men, their hopes and fears,
And I shall rule them with a steady hand.
If I shall wear this crown, I swear to you,
I will not let its weight corrupt my soul.
All the loose humour of my former days
I cast aside, when once I take my place.
The riot, wine, and idle company
Shall be no more companions of my life.
I shall be to the land a faithful shepherd,
To guard the quiet of our English realm.
KING HENRY.
Thou hast spoken well.
Come near me, Harry.
Put thy hand beneath my head, and hear my last words.
Now, set before thy eyes the end of kings.
All pomp, all glory, all the noisy praise
That follows royalty, is but a dream.
The king must wake, and bear the endless woe
That common men may never need to know.
I feel my breath go fast; my days are spent.
Be thou the father of our land, and keep
The peace that I have strove to build so long.
Farewell, my son.
Thy father’s blessing rest upon thy head.

都是他读懂世间百态的课堂;
